I'm beginning my journey into van life by watching Youtube videos of Van Builds. I'm at least a year away from buying my van, so I want to make use of this time by learning as much as possible.

What are some of the best Youtube videos that helped you with your builds?

Which steps were the most difficult, where you relied on Youtube to save the day?

Thanks for any suggestions,
Mike

Greetings!

Unfortunately the bad advice out numbers the good advice by about a 1000:1 ratio.  Why? Because they're all after your money!

A) Building your own is almost always stupid advice, and will cost you more than buying a factory made unit, and the end result will also be far lacking in comparison.

B) Larger, older Class C motorhomes are a better choice for most people, and can be found really cheap.

C) On newer rigs, due to depreciation alone, they will cost you far more than traditional living.

D) They sell you on a dream, a fantasy, totally different than what full timing is truly like.  Most of their victims lose a fortune andd give it up within a year.  Never gamble more than you're willing to lose.

E) In the process of selling you on a dream, they gloss over the most important part, HOW TO SUPPORT THAT DREAM!  Working less and playing more is pure BS.  This lifestyle takes lots of money to support it, and in truth most people wind up paying more for this lifestyle than they were paying before.

F) Most people live and work in the cities, and only venture out on weekends and vacations.  Traditional living, and a cheap older adventure vehicle is usually the better choice, as well as the cheaper choice.

G) Most BLM land is free because nobody in their right mind would want to camp there.  The good locations have established campgrounds and charge money.

H) Even most people who live in their rigs full time, live in the cities and in paid campgrounds, and they can be expensive.  Many spots in RV parks, especially in cities, cost more than a house or apartment would cost to rent.

I) Always have multiple backup plans, and the money to execute them.  Have enough money stashed to buy your way back into a more traditional lifestyle. MONEY! MONEY! MONEY! Money is always the best insurance policy to ensure your success at anything in life.

J) MONEY FIRST! Without a reliable income, you're just buying your way into homelessness.  The promoters are not your friends, they're greedy, sleazy, lying sales people, that have no problem leaving you broke and homeless.  Don't become another one of their victims.

K) The Dream is alive and well, but it has NOTHING to do with vandwelling.  Work hard, and if you still don't have enough money, work harder, work longer hours, or get a 2nd or 3rd job.  You can also move to a cheaper cost of living area.  Vandwelling isn't a magical solution to anything, and for most people it is a huge step in the wrong direction.

All that being said, I park for free on city streets.  Effectively boondocking in cities.  Since I am close to everything, I do very little driving except when changing towns, so I save a fortune compared to free boondocking 50+ miles from the middle of nowhere, or paying to park somewhere.  My full time job  involves changing areas every 2-6 weeks.

Cheers!
