Hey guys! I'm new to the concept of van life and have been completely absorbed by the details and research trying to start living the van life myself. I'm currently trying to configure the finances of not only joining the vanlife community but also trying to make my vanlife into a LIVING! If anyone has any advice on how they make money on the road, or if anyone has experience with food-trucks or bar-tending out of their van I would appreciate it.

Looking forward to this new adventure!!

Hey man, welcome! I don't know how much trouble you will get into for serving liquor out of your van! Maybe stick with coffee and tea or sandwiches!
What kind of van do you have? Van life is the best! This is a great forum :-)
Cheers man!

Greetings & Welcome!

The problem with mobile food trucks is that the equipment requirements can vary widely from location to location, and must be licensed in each location as well.  City/county/state food handlers certificates must be obtained too.  Then to top that off you have to collect & remit any city/county/state taxes.  All in all it sounds like a huge hassle if you're traveling.

I have known people who didn't travel, lived in a van or RV and had a separate food or ice cream truck though.

I think working online, or doing temp jobs, or day labor jobs is probably best for people who want to travel.  I would expect there to be plenty of temp jobs in the food industry in any decent sized city.

Depending on your personality and skills, there are plenty of opportunities to make money while traveling, or while stationary.  Some people make a very good living at flea markets & swap meets.  Others at the fairs, carnivals, rodeo's and the like.  I know a fellow who makes $100k+ a year selling sunglasses on street corners.  Sets up a table right beside the camper van he lives in.

Opportunities are everywhere if you seek them out, although I am a firm believer that you should get your future income sorted out before you hit the road.

Good Luck & keep us posted!
