Pooping
« on: September 10, 2017, 05:55:46 PM »
Sorry if this came up or has been discussed already. But since i am planning on doing an off grid van conversion, the following question came to my mind.

Where should you shit, when you dont have a wc in your van? since i want to travel really off the grid, is it reasonable to just shit in the woods?

Sorry if this is dumb, thanks for you answers anyway :)

Greetings & Welcome!

This is not a stupid question at all, and more people need to consider these things.  I don't think any camper van is complete without some sort of toilet, and adding a shower is even better!

For a DIY build, you have several choices.  The two most viable ones are a port-a-potty type camping toilet, or a bucket style camping toilet.  The biggest difference is that a port-a-potty style toilet must be emptied into a toilet or a RV dump station.  With a bucket style toilet, you line the bucket with a plastic bag, and it can be disposed of in any trash container, just like doggie doo.

I use the bucket style myself, and empty it once a week.  I add my weeks worth of trash on top of the contents, then tie off the bag.  I then carry it to the  trash container in the bucket, and dump the bag directly from the bucket into the trash.  This eliminates any possibility of the bag breaking on your way to the trash bin.

I try to use the toilet only for solids, and use a pee jug for liquid, which is easy to empty discreetly, especially at night.  Just make sure it has a leak proof lid.

There is nothing that beats having your own clean and sanitary toilet in your camper, ready and waiting for you any time, and any where.

Cheers!

Huge thank you for the very quick reply!

And thank you for the ideas you came up with. I like to keep things simple and small, so i think the bucket type is going to be my way aswell. But i think i will try to use it just as an emergency bucket, because I just don't like the idea of having to have a bucket which i pooped in, in the back of my van.

Port-a-potty would be to big i think, i want to convert a VW T4, in which isnt much space.

Or maybe i should reconsider my vehicle choise. But I really like to keep it small and compact. Especially for not much fuel consumption and tight roads, as they are found in the alps for example.

Cheers!

I was a lorry driver for years , piss in a bottle one with a bigger hole so you don't spray everywhere , old fresh water bottle the large supermarket type , I would empty it every day and wash it out with bleach , keep a bucket in your van as a last resort for a dump in case you ever get caught short , cheers
