Anyone here converted a Luton?
« on: September 05, 2016, 11:17:50 AM »
I was planning on buying a LWB Sprinter but after looking at some vans, we think we'd be better off going for a Luton as it's for permanent dwelling and my partner is just over 6 foot.

The information I'd find especially helpful is what's the best way to insulate an aluminium frame? When I planned for the Sprinter panel van, we were going to go for Ecoquilt on the walls and XPS on the floor (unsure about ceiling).

Also, this has to be stealth so we want to cut a hole in the cab? Does this have any MOT implications, and does it then need to be reinforced?

Thanks!

The only website I can point you towards is thevandiaries.com. I don't know about the MOT part, maybe you could ask a local MOT garage for their opinion.

Hi Shinobidef, I'm buying a Sprinter Luton tomorrow to convert. I've looked into a few of your questions already. I plan to make a hatch through to the cab area. Making a hatch won't cause any MOT problems as long as you don't make it too big and its cut close to a body to chassis anchor point. I'm probably going to use a foam type board like kingspan for insulating my ceiling. Unlike a panel van trapped moisture won't cause rust or any problems to the Luton box. Do you have Instagram or a Facebook page where I can follow your progress? :)

How are you planning to seal the gap between then cab and the box? The gap I mean is the existing gap between the cab wall and the box wall, not the gap you actually make.

I guess it depends on the size of the gap. I' pretty sure on most Mercedes Luton's they fit very close, maybe around 10mm. I have seen other vans which have a large gap of about 150mm. I think if the gap is reasonably small a caravan style sealant could be used and then the gap could be finished with a plastic strip to protect the metal edges of the hole. With a large gap i think i would make a aluminium tunnel and seal it in place

I'm in the final stages of converting a Ford Transit Luton. I cut a hole through the top of the cab so you pop up under the bed which is a little awkward. But I'm glad I did it, another great thing is you can open it up when your driving and its a great way to get a shit loads of air under the mattress, dealing with the problem of annoying moisture. No problems with the MOT.
Currently living in it and its bloody brilliant! Installing a wood burner very soon which will make it super cosy for the winter! Woopwoop!

Hello everyone,

We are a couple currently converting a luton van. We have previously converted a Sprinter LWB and spent a year travelling around Europe in it. We felt the need to 'upgrade' to a Luton and are currently converting it.

We have just cut a 'walk through' between the cab and the box and will be posting details on our blog. All other aspects of the conversion will be covered in detail as well so take a look at our blog (www.acoupleofadventurers.com) if you want to see how we are going about things.

Little write-up of our recent sprinter Luton conversion. Me and my girlfriend are on the road in Spain, plodding around and larking about. We're planning to stay in Spain for the foreseeable and find teaching work.
