I've been doing some research into kerosene heaters, just familiarizing myself with them knowing I'll eventually need one. I've found that there are used one I could get, and I've looked at various YouTube videos showing people changing the wick. My question is how often in practice do those of you who use these types of heaters have to change the wick?

Also, are there relatively small kerosene heaters for van sized living spaces? Apparently these tend to put out a fair amount of heat.

Cotton wicks need to be replaced periodically if you run it down to no kerosene.  Most of the newer heaters use fiberglass wicks, they don't really burn, but they will eventually get carbon deposits on them.  This carbon can be removed by either burning the wick dry, or by simply bending the wick back and forth, and it will crumble off, and the wick will become noticeably cleaner and more flexible.  This is the method I use, and my heater needs it about once every 2 years.  You'll know when it needs cleaning because it will become harder and slower to light.  I generally buy my heaters used, and the only times I've ever replaced wicks are when they're either damaged or missing when I buy them. 

The heaters come in two basic versions, the smaller ones are typically 8-10k BTU and they come in both rectangular and round shapes.  The round ones throw the bulk of the heat upwards, and the rectangular ones throw the bulk of the heat out the front.  Then there is a 23k BTU model, that usually just comes in the round style.  Any of these can be cooked on if desired too.  The size you'll want depends largely on how cold of weather you're planning on being in.  It gets down to -40f to -60f where I work in the winter, so I have the 23k BTU model.

There are also kerosene cook stoves, and mine has 2x 12k BTU burners.  The typical range seems to be between 8-12k BTU per burner.  These can also be used for heat by placing a large pot of sand or dirt over the burner.  Some but not all of them are more adjustable than the heaters, so you can turn them down really low just to maintain the temperature, once you get it up to where it's comfortable.  Some people just use their cook stoves for heat, and don't have a separate heater, so you have a number of options available. 

If it's really cold out, I'll run mine all night, with ventilation of course.  The worst that can happen is the flame will go out and you'll wake up cold.  Unlike propane, there are no risks of leaks or explosions because the kerosene is not pressurized.
