I think the best way is to buy already pre-built van bed. This days it's much easier to find what you need so you can save time and get a good quality product.
Yes, platform bed is good. But you can have something like murphy bed. So you can lift it if you want to transfer you bike without hassle. Or just have a free way to the back of your van. Check here
Yes, weight is important. I see some crazy beds with underneath cabinets made with 3/4 plywood. It's heavy! If you do DIY, use 5/8 or 1/2 (but in this case use you may need to enforce it from inside). Use glue and screws.
