We are a family of 4 with a dog and a cat living full time in a vehicle in the UK. In my experience it really isn't feasible to be at all stealthy when there are children and animals onboard! We found a series of small independent campsites near us and also sent a polite and honest letter to farms and liveries in our area all of which are close enough to allow us to stay in work and school. It can be done even in a vehicle as daft as ours! It might have some bearing that we are in an area where camping is fairly popular and so there are a good number of sites to choose from. You should also be aware of the potential difficulties of vehicle dwelling with a family, it's not for everyone. I would definitely recommend spending an extended period living in your van before you bin the bricks and mortar.  ;)

The back room of our lorry has been a workshop for the last six years but now we want to change it into a bedroom for our two children. My hope is that someone on here may have experience with converting a roller shutter into a wall on there own vehicle and might be able to provide me with some pointers? My initial idea was to use silicone on the outside to seal any gaps and stop the ingress of water. I then plan to attach a stud wall to the inside of the shutter with a double layer of insulation in between. If you are practically minded then please feel free to chip in with suggestions or criticisms! Many thanks for any advice I might get, Joe.

Common Room / New to van/lorry life
December 22, 2016, 09:15:13 AM
Just thought I'd say hi before I start pestering everyone for advice. We are a young family new to van living and making the first steps towards a more fulfilled life aboard our beautiful Leyland roadrunner Maizey. I've taken a lot from the book which I thoroughly recommend but still have a lot to learn!
