Van Conversion / Re: Anyone here converted a Luton?

Hi Shinobidef, I'm buying a Sprinter Luton tomorrow to convert. I've looked into a few of your questions already. I plan to make a hatch through to the cab area. Making a hatch won't cause any MOT problems as long as you don't make it too big and its cut close to a body to chassis anchor point. I'm probably going to use a foam type board like kingspan for insulating my ceiling. Unlike a panel van trapped moisture won't cause rust or any problems to the Luton box. Do you have Instagram or a Facebook page where I can follow your progress? :)

How are you planning to seal the gap between then cab and the box? The gap I mean is the existing gap between the cab wall and the box wall, not the gap you actually make.

Van Conversion / Re: Environmentally friendly Adhesive

For sticking insulation then I would use normal spray glue. You look like you're trying to be as eco friendly as possible but sometimes you just have to put that to one side and use regular stuff. You could experiment with flour & water based glue which you can make yourself. This is a paste which you brush on, so you could try it with a small piece of insulation to see if it works.

Are you looking for something like eco-bond?

The only website I can point you towards is thevandiaries.com. I don't know about the MOT part, maybe you could ask a local MOT garage for their opinion.

So you're ready to start your adventure? Leaving Yorkshire will be the hardest part  :)

Van Conversion / Re: Trailers versus Vans.. ?

I would agree with Nulife about the van option. If you're considering stealth camping then a trailer does limit your options. A trailer might be a good choice if you only stay on camp grounds, and have a suitable towing vehicle.

Van Conversion / Re: Possible Sprinter Conversion Noob

Kylee, just to add to Phranc's informative points. You don't have to cut holes in a van if you don't want to. If the van already has side/back windows then you don't need to cut out more. A roof fan is nice to have but you can live without one. You might be able to find a van that is already paneled inside so you can reuse those panels after removing to clean and add insulation. A couple of more websites to look at are http://sbmcc.co.uk/ and Vince Amendola youtube site. He converted a Sprinter in a week and is currently reposting all the videos of his build. There are lots of videos on converting a van, and although it will throw up challenges , it's not that difficult, even if you have no or little d.i.y skills. You could buy Mike's book which not only goes through the process step by step but also helps Mike fund his adventure.

The more stealthy you make your van the easier it will be to stay under the radar.

Have you ever slept in a hammock before? If yes, and you feel comfortable doing this then go for it. If you haven't slept in a hammock then give it a go and see if it works for you. My personal choice would be hammocks great for relaxing but not ideal for a permanent sleeping solution.

Living and travelling... in a van / Re: Monthly budget

As you have already realised there are many variables in answering your question. The Buckleys, who are currently touring Europe, have prepared some figures on their website which might help. There figures are based on 2 people and a dog but they will give you an idea. http://ourtour.co.uk/home/all-things-money/

Van Conversion / Re: Insulation and sound proofing

Finish your insulation and see what it sounds like. You could always put in a false bulkhead with a door to give you access between the cab and the living area.

That looks like an MOT failure. If you can weld or know someone that can then I would have second thoughts about this van. Don't forget the rust you can see is not the whole story/ Check under the van at the frame and see if there is rust there as well.

Now been in the van 181 days with 86 days to go until departure. We were evicted by the local council for living in a local park( via a letter under the windscreen wiper!)so we've been lucky enough to be allowed an indefinate stay in the wonderful Adelphi carpark( local music venue).  We have registered with 'workaway.com.' which has cost 38Euros for a one year subsrcription for a couple. Managed to secure 3 volunteer experiences which will take us up to the Xmas period and save us a little bit of cash as we get our food and accomodation provided which is great.
Now just seeing out the last couple of months at work before the adventure begins. 1st stop is Portsmouth to catch ferry to Northern Spain and then a fortnight of wild camping whilst making our way to the Algarve for our 1st workaway volunteering. Can't wait!!

If you're going to wild camp then you shouldn't stay in the same spot more than 2 days at the most, otherwise you just stand out. Instead of sailing from Portsmouth to Spain why not take a leisurely drive through France where free aires are plentiful and the scenery and food is stunning?

I have heard about these but haven't used one. I saw one being demonstrated on youtube by a van dweller and if I can find the video I'll post a link.

MiniVanVince did a great job on his mpv. You can check his youtube videos and watch his build.
