Title: Battery question
Post by: Otter on April 08, 2018, 06:04:15 PM
Is it necessary to use a deep cell battery  for your house battery?
I have a car battery from my old car. It's less than a year old.  Will that work for a house battery?

Thanks

Greetings!

A regular car battery isn't optimal, but yes  it will work.  Hook it up to charge while driving, and try to keep your use as minimal as possible.

I would also put a low battery cut off on it, so you don't kill it prematurely.

Cheers!

Thank you.
I'll be using that til I can find a deep cell I can afford. My power needs are minimum and I'll have daily access to shore power.

Cheers

Greetings!

Many years ago now, at the advice of an old timer, I started buying my batteries at wrecking yards.  Usually for under $20 you can get a practically brand new battery, and if you look, you can get deep cycle ones too.  Both my 105ah deep cycle house battery and my starter battery came  from junkyards, and both have lasted over 5 years now.  Most of the batteries will have a date somewhere on their labels, so it's pretty easy to pick relatively new ones.

Cheers!
