The best programming languages to learn in 2024

Information technology is constantly expanding and competition in the industry is more intense than ever. With every aspect of our lives going digital, the demand for IT experts is skyrocketing every day.

Programming languages are the epicenter of this ever-growing field of computer science. However, it can be overwhelming and confusing to choose which one to learn or expand upon from the hundreds of programming languages available.

I needed to write my research paper about programming languages - that's why I decided to dive into this topic deeper. This article will describe the best programming languages to learn in 2021 to start or expand your career.

1. JavaScript

JavaScript code

JavaScript is by far the most widely used programming language in the world. Almost every website you visit, whether it's Facebook, Google or wowessays.com, uses JavaScript in its infrastructure.

To add dynamism and interactivity to your website's interface, JavaScript is a must. Add to that their various frameworks, such as Node.js, and you get a language capable of server-side scripting as well.

You can also create large-scale games on an external game engine or in a browser using JavaScript.

Overall, learning this cross-platform intermediate programming language will be invaluable, whether you're just starting out or delving deeper into the field of computer science.

It is primarily used for:

Front-end and back-end web development.
Mobile applications
Game development

2. Python

Python programming language

The ever-increasing importance of data in business and almost every other industry has led to an ever-increasing popularity and demand for Python. Python's vast collection of libraries, tools and frameworks makes it a must in the field of data science and machine learning.

In addition to being exceptional at data management, it is also incredibly versatile. There's nothing Python can't do from server-side development, web and mobile application development to creating machine learning software. Plus, it's intuitive and elementary to learn, even for beginners.

If there is a language to learn based on potential and demand in 2021, Python is that language.

Primarily used for:
Data science
Artificial Intelligence
Machine learning
Back-end development
Web and mobile application development

3. Go to

Go programming language

Go is short for Golang, and tech giant Google developed it in 2007 as an alternative to languages like Java, C and C++. As a result, it has a surprisingly short compile time along with a cleaner and smaller syntax, unlike C++ or Java.

Projects such as Kubernetes, Docker and Blockchain use Go to support effortless, multi-threaded concurrent process execution. Go is lightweight and excellent for writing network applications.

4. Java

Java programming language

Despite being one of the oldest object-oriented programming languages, Java remains one of the most popular and sought after. A testament to its popularity and demand is its No. 2 ranking in the PYPL popularity index in June 2024.

Java is ubiquitous on the web, Android apps, banking and financial software, desktop computers, etc.

It is mainly used for:

Android application development
web development
Software
Finance and e-commerce

6. Kotlin

Kotlin programming language

Android is the best-selling and most widely used operating system worldwide, and Google has declared Kotlin as the primary language for Android development. Therefore, it makes sense that there can't be a list of the best programming languages without Kotlin.

Specifically, it is a cross-platform generic coding language that offers full interoperability with Java.

This is because it has adopted the best practices of other object-oriented languages and remains easy to learn. Therefore, having Kotlin in your arsenal would be of great help in promoting or starting your career as a developer in 2024.

It is mainly used for:

Android application development.
Software and web development
Data science
Server-side development

6. PHP

PHP programming language

A massive server-side application builder in its own right, nearly 80% of all websites use PHP. Technology giants such as Yahoo, Wikipedia and Facebook also value PHP highly.

Its syntax is very clear and easy to learn. It also offers you many powerful frameworks like Laravel, which make your life even easier. In addition, PHP is compatible with all major databases.

PHP also offers a lot of automation tools to deploy and test your applications. In addition, PHP developers are working day and night to establish their generic programming state from a server-side scripting language.

Mainly used for:

Backend web development
Server-side scripting

7. C #

C # - programming language

C # (pronounced as "C sharp") is a programming language created by Microsoft and inspired by the C programming language. However, C# is much more advanced, dynamic and fully integrated with the .NET framework.

Most developers love C # for creating 2D and 3D games with the Unity game engine. Well, it is also quite popular for mobile and desktop application development.

In addition, C# is also useful in web development. You can find notable examples of server-side C # web development from Bing and Visual Studio.

Holding the fourth position in the PYPL popularity index at the moment, the demand and growth of C# as a programming language will surely increase with time. So, if you are learning C # in 2021, you won't be late or short a dollar.

It is primarily used for:

2D and 3D game development
web development
Mobile and desktop applications
