This road takes you through some of Norway’s most amazing landscapes and scenery.
It’s the road that’s had the most ‘woahs’ so far from me whilst driving the van through Norway. And the best thing? you can stop anywhere and camp!
Let me show you Road 55…
Road 55 – through the mountains
It takes you alongside the clear, Mediterranean-like, water of Lustrafjord
And into the mountains
It’s the main gateway to the Jotunheimen National Park – Norway’s highest mountains
The highest point is nearly 1500m as you pass by glaciers and lakes

You’ll want to stop in nearly every lay-by
There are plenty walks and hikes that start directly from the road
With more than 250 peaks rising above 1900 metres
Home to reindeer, elk, deer, wolverines and lynx
The glaciers have this amazing luminescent glow
Giving the lakes and streams this emerald green colour from the meltwater
We took a turning off the main road
To find a camping spot for the night
So we camped here
And here, next to the rainbow
It’s definitely worth spending a few days to explore this whole area. There are plenty of places to camp here, along the road, and just off the road.
From here we went to climb the highest mountain peak in Norway
