I’ve never seen the Aurora so much as I did in Sweden; almost every night!
In this post I’ll share the two best locations for experiencing the aurora in Sweden, especially if you’re in a campervan…
The best locations to see the aurora in Sweden
Abisko van-camping spot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/prnDszfXih9upHV69
Nikkaloukta van-camping spot: https://maps.app.goo.gl/hgMz4wxzHSWXUSqv8

First location: Abisko
This is the most northern town in Sweden. It’s a unique ‘blue hole in the sky’ location.
See post: The Wonders of Abisko National Park – in a Campervan

The harbour
When it’s very quiet and out of season you can park here with your van.

You’ll need a manual camera and sturdy tripod

There’s a nice view of surrounding mountains

And a huge lake to get those aurora reflections

Wait for some interesting tendrils

And snapppppppp (lasting 10 seconds)

You don’t even need to leave the van

But I recommend it

You can also park in the free carpark (Abisko), a 5 min walk away

You’ll see the aurora here as well

But the harbour has clearer views

Second location: Nikkaloukta
See post: VANishing into Sweden’s wilderness – by campervan and foot

The sky isn’t as clear as Abisko

But you’ll be alone here

With much more space to explore

To get that angle

Especially if you want shots with your van

Or to go for a midnight walk through the valley

If you want an easy way of seeing the Aurora (no tour guides needed), head straight to Abisko. It has a patch of clear sky that extends to 20 sq km over the village, regardless of surrounding weather. This is why you can see the Aurora almost every night.
